Australia’s MONSTER FEST Opens Submissions for Features, Shorts and Expanded Cinema Projects!

Australia’s MONSTER FEST Opens Submissions for Features, Shorts and Expanded

Cinema Projects

Monster Fest has announced that submissions are now open for Features, Short Films and Expanded Cinema Projects, with an Early Bird Deadline of April 29, a Regular Deadline of June 3 and a final, Extended Deadline of August 12, 2016.

Australia’s premier festival of cult, horror and the fantastic, Monster Fest returns for its sixth edition November 24-27, 2016 at the Lido Cinemas in Melbourne, with support from Screen Australia.

Submissions for Monster Fest 2016 can be processed via Film Freeway, Without a Box and Film Festival Life. Details and submission guidelines are available at .

Headed up by Festival Director Kier-La Janisse (author of House of Psychotic Women, founder of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies and Spectacular Optical Publications) with programming support from genre scholar Alexandra Heller-Nicholas (author of Rape-Revenge Films: A Critical Study and Devil’s Advocates: Suspiria) and executive produced by Neil Foley and Grant Hardie of Monster Pictures, Monster Fest 2016 will feature Australian premieres alongside festival favourites and repertory classics, with international special guests, industry panels and events, exhibitions, vendor booths, parties and more.

“We’re already hitting the festival circuit, markets and schools, scouting new films, but I can’t wait for the submissions to start rolling in to see what unheralded discoveries await us,” says Janisse. “We’ll have more room for short films, including animation, and we’re officially opening up to expanded cinema proposals this year too. While we have featured such projects in an invited capacity before, this year we wanted to open it up and see what was out there in terms of genre-related media projects that might not be merely conventional time-based screenings. So presentations, installations, projects that rely on the participation of the artist to maneuver or manipulate the show, creating a one-of-a-kind experience. We’re definitely stepping it up for 2016 – it’s going to be an exciting year.”

Monster Fest was established in 2011 as the exhibition arm of Monster Pictures, and since that time has garnered a reputation for showcasing some of the finest new independent genre films in the world, giving Australian audiences an opportunity to experience them on the big screen, both at the annual festival in Melbourne and at satellite events throughout Australia year round.

Happy Twin Peaks Day!

Would You Buy A David Bowie Premium Format Figure Statue If Sideshow Collectibles Got Permission From His Estate?

I think in the past the artisans at Sideshow Collectibles have done limited Premium Format Figure statues of music legends. If Sideshow were given the okay by his estate, maybe Sideshow might create a David Bowie Premium Format Figure if there was enough interest in one from fans to honor the legend who truly had an impact on music and passed away last month.

Maybe a short edition size with either a Ziggy Stardust era Bowie and or a 1980s era Bowie circa the "Lets Dance" record from 1983 that introduced a generation to the singer's music that were too young to really appreciate his songs when they were children in the 1979s. I think his persona then was The Thin White Duke.

I spoke to a customer service representative at Sideshow Collectibles today and she agrees that it was not only a great idea, but that she would buy one. I told her for a company that celebrates archetypal characters and states "Pop Culture Is Our Culture" that David Bowir fits the bill in more ways than one. So what do you all think? If this interests you write or call Sideshow and let them know.Thank you.

Douglas Rushkoff to Release Occult Graphic Novel “Aleister & Adolf”

Douglas Rushkoff to Release Occult Graphic Novel “Aleister & Adolf”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR— This fall, Dark Horse Books is set to publish a perception-altering narrative from media maverick Douglas Rushkoff: Aleister & Adolf!

In Aleister & Adolf, media theorist and documentarian Douglas Rushkoff weaves a mind-bending tale of iconography and mysticism, set against the backdrop of a battle-torn Europe.

This all-new original graphic novel, beautifully rendered by Michael Avon Oeming (The Victories, Powers), views real-world history through a psychedelic occult lens.

In a story spanning generations and featuring some of the most notable and notorious idealists of the twentieth century, legendary occultist Aleister Crowley develops a powerful and dangerous new weapon to defend the world against Adolf Hitler’s own war machine—spawning an unconventional new form of warfare that is fought not with steel but with symbols and ideas. But these intangible arsenals are much more insidious—and perhaps much more dangerous—than their creators could have ever conceived.

Warren Ellis, author of Gun Machine, Red, Trees, and Transmetropolitan, says Rushkoff is “a cultural treasure and an eccentric author of big, strange ideas, never less than fascinating and always entertaining.”

Aleister & Adolf (978-1-50670-104-2) is in stores November 2, 2016. Preorder your copy today at your local comic shop or through these fine retailers:

My overall thoughts on season ten of The X-Files.

Though The X-Files always had a variety of episodes that included monster of the week and the comedic story, I think that this tenth season would have been better if episode 6 was the second episode because then they would not have had to rush through elements the way they did and certain storylines that developed in the background of every episode would have been carried to fruition and not just left somewhat clumsily unresolved. I think and hope there will be an eleventh season, but I am a fan of the original series. This event presentation should have made new fans too with a more cohesive storyline that paid off. Then it would have been remembered as one of the best comebacks to network television instead of just being a largely positive, but muddled hodge podge of unrelated surreal things.

    The Hobbit. New product release...

Hobbit Hole #23, The Great Garden Smial

Scattered among the grassy hills of Hobbiton like a purse full of lost coins, the bright round doors of many dozen hobbit-holes shine in bright, summery hues, each home to a hobbit or family of the little people. As diverse as the rosy-cheeked hobbits themselves, every smial, as hobbit-holes are known, reflects the unique personality of its inhabitant and nestles into the hillside amid a sea of lush greenery. Among the largest of Hobbiton’s homes are the richly planted, sprawling smials overlooking the bountiful vegetable gardens.

THE REALITY OF TRUTH is a just-released controversial, feature length documentary that follows Mike “Zappy” Zapolin and his friends, including Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar, The Fast and the Furious), currently shooting The Fast and the Furious 8. They go on a worldwide search for ancient wisdom technology hidden in nature for centuries, that could be used for today’s problems including violence, eco-destruction, depression, and addiction. Guided by Deepak Chopra, the group of “Psychenauts” (Sailors of the Mind) explore meditation, breathing, and natural plants as gateways to transcend inside their minds for answers and healing.  Along the way the group discovers that some of the secrets they discover are truly some of the answers that society needs, and they attempt to share the information despite suppression by governments, religious institutions, and corporations.  Intermittently during their journey they meet with Deepak to talk about what they have experienced and how to best integrate it into their lives.  The group also sought insight and guidance from top thought leaders, celebrities, and high profile individuals of all faiths including Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Joel Osteen, Marianne Williamson, Ram Dass, Transcendental Meditation leader Dr. John Hagelin, Dr. Michael Beckwith, bestselling author Dr. Norman Rosenthal, Bruce H. Lipton, Foster Gamble, Mark Victor Hansen, Peter Coyote, Gerard Powell, founder of Rythmia Life Advancement Center, Marcus and Joni Lamb, with input from other notables like David Lynch.

The Reality of Truth offers the viewer a front row seat on an around the world exploration of how people, groups and entire cultures tap into an alternative “true reality” through spirituality, meditation, and plant medicine, referencing their importance throughout history.  Driven by Einstein’s statement, “You can’t solve a problem using the same thinking or consciousness that got you into the situation,” the group seeks to have the “direct experience” personally to expand each of their individual consciousness and determine if there is something that could change society’s collective consciousness.

Deepak Chopra says, “There is no such thing as hallucinations…we become one with the source.” Sri Sri Ravi Shankar goes on to say, “What we see is only a small piece of the true reality.”
It is shown in the film how the group got together regularly to talk about how they integrated their experiences into their lives, dealing with stardom and success, as well as pain and loss.   Michelle Rodriguez shares how her training played into her view of her life. After using the medicinal plant Ayahuasca in Peru, she revealed, “It brought the destruction of everything I’ve ever known….I had an awakening.”  She feels that her new awareness helped her to cope with the loss of close friend, actor Paul Walker. Michelle’s transformation is open and evident throughout the course of the film, availing her to new personal and career pursuits.

The film captures the culture and energy of some of the most spiritual places on earth including Maui, Peru, Costa Rica, and even Fairfield, Iowa.  In Costa Rica, Rythmia Life Advancement Center is featured as an example of the effectiveness of alternative modalities on both spiritual and physical enlightenment. The filmmakers and their guests explore many myths about reality and address their personal experiences with spirituality and transcendence. The awareness created by the film worldwide is meant to break through the “illusion of reality” and allow viewers to move forward toward a more meaningful and peaceful future.

Throughout history, human beings have searched for gateways to spirituality that have included meditation, prayer, and natural substances. The Judeo Christian religious tenets and values, Vedic and Shamanistic traditions all incorporate techniques focused on transcending. Today scientists are able to measure the effects, real and perceived, on the human brain and mind. For instance, it is cited that "Veterans showed a 50% reduction of PTSD symptoms after just eight weeks of Transcendental Meditation practice" (Military Medicine) and "Prisoners participating in the TM program were 33% less likely to return to prison" (Journal of Offender Rehabilitation).   Experiments done at Harvard in the past suggest that 60% of alcoholics could break their addiction immediately using ancient wisdom techniques.

Large groups of people live free of violence, judgment and hatred, focusing within and choosing to find their similarities and respecting their differences. One of the aspirations of this film is to alert people to the tools available to help to accomplish those goals.

The film was directed by Mike “Zappy” Zapolin and Laurent Levy, produced by Adam Singer, former Head of Acquisitions for ContentFilm (Thank You for Smoking) and producer of feature documentaries (Free Wheels East).  The supervising editor was Kurt Engfehr (Bowling for Columbine), and the film was edited by Luis Robledo.  Michelle Rodriguez is a producer of this passion project.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR— Kim W. Andersson is making waves in the international comics and film community. His original Swedish graphic novel Alena was adapted into a feature-length film in Sweden that just received a critically acclaimed US debut at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival 2016. Now the graphic novel will see full US distribution through Dark Horse Comics.

Alena’s life is a living hell. Since she arrived at a snobbish boarding school, she’s been harassed every day by Philippa and the girls on the lacrosse team. But Alena’s best friend Josephine is not going to accept that anymore.

Not from the counselor or the principal, not from Philippa, and not from anyone else at that horrid school. If Alena does not fight back, then Josephine will take matters into her own hands.

There’s just one problem . . . Josephine has been dead for a year.

Author and artist Kim W. Andersson (The Complete Love Hurts) is the winner of the Swedish Comics Academy’s Adamson statue—Sweden’s most prestigious comics award—and a creator to watch in the coming year.

“Kim W. Andersson’s graphic novel Alena has unsurprisingly been described as Let the Right One In meets Show Me Love set in a boarding school. Count on vengeance, violence and broken teenage hearts.”—Stockholm Film Festival

“Not for the faint of heart, but wicked fun for the right audience.”—Booklist

Dark Horse Announces Dark Horse Day Celebration To Take Place June 4!

Dark Horse Announces Dark Horse Day Celebration To Take Place June 4!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR—2016 marks the thirtieth anniversary of Dark Horse Comics, and it’s time to party!

To celebrate, Dark Horse is proclaiming Saturday, June 4, 2016, to be “Dark Horse Day,” with events happening in comic shops around the country! We are inviting our retail partners to celebrate with us by offering exclusive promotional materials, ordering discounts on Dark Horse Comics backlist titles, and a commemorative Dark Horse Day Sampler comic!

“Just over thirty years ago, I gathered a group of would-be collaborators in the restaurant I owned and told them I was going to start a comics company. I’m not sure whether their smiles were a result of excitement over the possibilities or amusement at the thought of it, but here we are all these years later making comic books,” remarked Dark Horse president and publisher Mike Richardson. “It’s been an amazing journey and we’ve witnessed extraordinary changes both in the comics market and in our pop culture over three decades. We’re excited to still be spending our lives in the career we love, and we hope that you all will help us celebrate thirty years of comics.”

As Dark Horse Comics turns thirty, we present a look back at some of our top titles from past decades in an exclusive Dark Horse Day Sampler comic featuring classic stories including Aliens vs. Predator: Blood Time (1994), by Randy Stradley and Phill Norwood, Sin City: Daddy’s Little Girl (1996), by Frank Miller, and The Umbrella Academy: Anywhere but Here(2008), by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá! Plus: a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer tale by Christos Gage! The forty-page Dark Horse Day Sampler comic features a special cover by Steve Morris and will be available in comic shops everywhere on June 4.

“It’s hard to believe it has been thirty years—mainly because the memories of seeing our first comics on the stands and going to conventions and meeting fans for the first time are still so clear. If you’re a Dark Horse fan, or if you’ve ever been a Dark Horse fan, I hope you join us for this milestone celebration!” added Dark Horse vice president of publishing Randy Stradley.

Fans: Make sure to tell your retailer you want your local store to participate in this awesome celebration!

Retailers: Look for the April cover-dated issue of Previews for details on participation levels, along with promotional support being offered by Dark Horse for the event!

Dave McKean Channels WWI Surrealism in New Original Graphic Novel

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILWAUKIE, OR—Dark Horse proudly presents Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash, a new original graphic novel by the legendary artist Dave McKean based on the life of surrealist painter Paul Nash.

Black Dog takes biographical moments from Paul Nash’s life and explorations of his work, writing, and imagination and mixes them with firsthand accounts of the First World War. Presented as a series of surreal dreams, the stories add up to a moving piece about how war and extreme situations change us and how we deal with the resulting pain—in Nash’s case, by turning landscapes into powerful and fantastical “psychoscapes.”

Best known for his collaborations with Neil Gaiman, McKean defied expectations with his stunning debut as writer and artist in Cages, winner of multiple awards for Best Graphic Album. McKean is also the winner of the Alph-Art, Pantera, Harvey, Spectrum, and BSFA awards.
